Well Water Testing

Municipal and other public water suppliers are required to test their water periodically.

If you own a home with a private well, however, you are your own water company. You are on your own to insure that your water is safe for your family. Although private wells are vulnerable to the same purity problems that can occur in public water supplies, homeowners are not required to test them. As a result, many wells go untested for years.

Well water contaminants fall into two broad categories.

1. Nuisance elements are contaminants that may make your water taste bad or smell funny, stain your clothes and porcelain fixtures, or deteriorate your plumbing. These may hurt your house, but usually not you. Common ones are pH and hardness levels, iron, manganese, chloride and copper.

2. Health hazards are the things that can make you and your family sick. Common ones are E. coli, nitrates and nitrites, lead, arsenic, radon and excess fluoride.

The Last Detail offers water testing by an accredited environmental testing laboratory as an add-on to our home inspections, as well as separately.
